The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation's 3.1 million registered nurses through its constituent member nurses associations and its organizational affiliates. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
For over 100 years, ANA has been working to improve patient safety by promoting nursing quality. The National Center for Nursing Quality (NCNQ®) was created by ANA to address patient safety and quality in nursing care and nurses' work lives. The center advocates for nursing quality through quality measurement, novel research, and collaborative learning.
The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI®), a repository for nursing-sensitive indicators, is a program of NCNQ®. The database collects and evaluates unit-specific nurse-sensitive data from hospitals in the United States and internationally. NDNQI® is the only national database containing data collected at the nursing unit level. Membership in NDNQI is confidential. Institutional identity is not disclosed through data transmission, data storage, or reporting. Database access is restricted to authorized NDNQI staff.
